چکیده

1. Departamento de Clínica Médica, Universidade Federal de Santa Catarina, Florianópolis (SC) Brasil. 2. Departamento de Radiologia, Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro, Rio de Janeiro (RJ) Brasil. A 37-year-old homosexual Brazilian man presented with fever, chest pain, and several small, palpable lumps in the anterior chest wall. Physical examination revealed numerous mobile subcutaneous and intramuscular nodules measuring 1-2 cm in the anterior chest wall, with signs of a local inflammatory process. Chest CT scanning showed numerous round and oval nodules, most of which had rim calcifications, in the anterior chest wall. The nodules were apparently related to the muscles of the region (Figure 1). Since the patient was from a cysticercosis endemic region, this infection was initially suspected. However, the CT findings were not suggestive of cysticercosis. The characteristic morphology of the calcifications observed in cysticercosis is “rice like” (or “cigar shaped”), and the calcifications are orientated along the long axes of the muscles. In addition, nodules in cysticercosis are distributed diffusely throughout the muscles.(1) In our case, the calcifications presented with a rimmed aspect and occurred only in the anterior chest wall. Upon further discussion, the patient reported that he had undergone liquid silicone injection into the breasts, performed by an unskilled individual for soft-tissue augmentation, 12 years previously. In conclusion, sequelae of liquid silicone injection should be included in the differential diagnosis of chest wall calcifications.

A Classic Case of Subcutaneous Cysticercosis: A Rare Case with Sonological Findings and Review of Literature

BACKGROUND Cysticercosis is a parasitic infection caused by the larval stages of the pork tapeworm, Taenia solium. The subcutaneous form of the disease is a relatively rare clinical entity. Despite its rarity, it is imperative for a radiologist to be aware of this subcutaneous form of the disease and its various radiological patterns while evaluating any subcutaneous swelling. In this paper, we...

Designing and construction of breast shields using silicone composite of Bismuth for chest CT

Background: Bismuth composites are new and non-lead shields that are capable of breast dose reduction while preserving image quality. In this study, different percentages of Bismuth were used in designing and constructing polymer composites as breast shields in chest CT.  Materials and Methods: Micro particles of Bismuth with a ratio of 1% to 15% in Silicone matrix with two thicknesses were use...

Diagnosis of subcutaneous cysticercosis in fine needle aspirates: a study of 10 cases.

The objective of this study is to document the value of Fine Needle Aspiration Cytology (FNAC) in the diagnosis of subcutaneous cysticercosis. Aspirates smears of 10 cases of subcutaneous swellings were studied over a period of 1 year between January 2004 and January 2005. The subcutaneous swellings were presented at different sites like cheek, neck, forearm, arm, chest wall and abdominal wall....

Numerical Study of Electro-thermo-convection in a Differentially Heated Cavity Filled with a Dielectric Liquid Subjected to Partial Unipolar Injection

The Coulomb force applied by an electric field on any charge present in a dielectric liquid may cause fluid motion. At high applied electric fields in an insulating liquid, electric charge carriers are created at metallic/liquid interfaces, a process referred to as ion injection, and result from electrochemical reactions. In this article we deals with the problem of electro thermal convection i...
